 Description of  Life of Pi

The computer animated adventure film Life Of Pi is an American live-action drama movie in 3D, which draws its inspiration from the 2001 novel by Yann Martel of the same name. Released in 2012, the movie’s adapted screenplay was written by David Magee and directed by Ang Lee. The star cast of the film includes Suraj Sharma in the lead role and Irrfan Khan, Rafe Spall, Gerard Depardieu, Adil Hussain and Tabu in supporting roles. A critical and commercial success, Life Of Pi has amassed more than 609 million dollars around the world. It won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score and won four other awards at the 85th Academy Awards.

The story of this Ang Lee movie accounts the life of a young boy who is stranded at sea after the ship he was on with his family capsizes. His journey of discovery and adventure is chronicled rather gloriously in this work of art, as he loses those dearest to him. Perhaps the most powerful part of the feature film is the boy’s unexplained attachment to his only companion in the survival. The movie opens with a writer paying a visit to an Indian storyteller in Canada named Pi Patel. Curious to know the story behind the storyteller’s nickname as well as his origins, the writer gets into a discussion with him about his childhood and life in India.

The story then jumps to a small town in Pondicherry where Pi lived with his parents. His father was a zoo owner and had to move jobs to Canada with all of his animals. In the process of relocating, the family boards a Japanese cargo ship in which they place all of their zoo animals. Struck by disaster in the form of a storm, the ship sinks and Pi becomes the only one to survive. What he doesn’t notice initially, is that the boat that in which he survived has other survivors too, namely a zebra, a hyena, an orangutan and a male Bengal tiger called Richard Parker.

Life Of Pi by Ang Lee was released on 2013 by 20th century Fox in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. The movie is rated U/A and is available in the DVD formats.
